iFixit Claims iPhone 16 Is the Most Repair-Friendly Model in History

September 24, 2024 – The iFixit team has recently dismantled the latest iPhone 16, praising it as the “most repairable iPhone ever.” This accolade is largely due to a series of structural enhancements Apple has implemented within the device, notably the introduction of a novel adhesive for securing the battery.

Historically, iFixit has been critical of Apple’s devices for their repair difficulties. Compatibility issues often arose when attempting to replace internal components, rendering them dysfunctional. However, with the release of the iPhone 16, it appears that Apple is striving to enhance the repairability of its devices.

During the dismantling process, iFixit discovered that the iPhone 16 utilizes a new type of “smart glue” to affix the battery. This innovative adhesive releases upon the application of a mild electrical current, greatly simplifying the battery removal process. This method proves superior to the previous pull-tab adhesive, expediting and facilitating battery replacement.

Furthermore, the iFixit teardown revealed that Apple has incorporated an iron heat sink to improve heat dissipation for the A18 chip. Curiously, this heat sink only covers half of the SoC, presumably the section housing the neural engine.

Regarding the new camera control button, iFixit found it to be laser-welded to the phone’s frame, implying that a faulty button would necessitate replacing the entire frame. Additionally, iFixit commended Apple for its comprehensive repair manuals.

As a result of these modifications, the iPhone 16 achieved a repairability score of 7 out of 10, a significant improvement over the iPhone 15’s score of 4. iFixit highlighted the phone’s dual-entry design, ease of access to multiple components, and the straightforward battery access for quick repairs.

It seems that Apple is striving to enhance the repairability of its devices, possibly due to regulatory pressures, but ultimately benefiting the consumers.
