February 13, 2025 – Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has unveiled a roadmap on social media platform X, detailing the development plans for the company’s GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 AI models.
In his post, Altman acknowledged that OpenAI’s product line has become complex, and the company aims to “do better” in simplifying its offerings. He stated, “We, like our users, dislike model selectors, and we want to return to a unified intelligent experience.” According to the plan, OpenAI will introduce GPT-4.5, internally known as “Orion,” which will be the company’s “last non-chain-of-thought model.”

Following GPT-4.5, Altman emphasized that a key objective for OpenAI is to “unify the o-series models with the GPT series, creating systems that can use all of our tools, know when to think for a long time and when not to, and are broadly applicable to various tasks.” He mentioned that the company plans to release GPT-5 as a system that integrates multiple technologies, including o3. “o3 will no longer be launched as a standalone model,” he added. The o3 technology was first announced in December 2024, and OpenAI subsequently released the o3-mini version in January 2025.
Upon the launch of GPT-5, Altman stated that free ChatGPT users will gain “unlimited chat access” under the “standard intelligence setting.” Plus subscribers will have access to GPT-5’s “higher level of intelligence,” while Pro subscribers will receive an “even higher tier of intelligent experience.” However, Altman did not provide specific release dates for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, only offering a general estimate of “weeks/months.”
Meanwhile, this week, Elon Musk proposed to acquire OpenAI’s non-profit division for $97.4 billion. However, the OpenAI board plans to reject this acquisition offer.
