January 15, 2025 – In an internal memo released today, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, announced that the company is set to embark on a fresh round of layoffs aimed at elevating performance management standards and swiftly removing underperforming employees.
This round of layoffs will impact roughly 5% of employees who have failed to meet expectations, and Meta will be “offering severance packages as generous as those provided during previous layoffs.” Additionally, Zuckerberg mentioned that Meta intends to refill these vacated positions throughout the year.

It’s worth noting that Meta previously shed 21,000 employees between 2022 and 2023, with the last wave of layoffs occurring in October of last year.
In the memo, Zuckerberg further stated that Meta is dedicated to building some of the world’s top technologies, including AI, smart glasses as the next computing platform, and the future of social media. “This year will be intense, and I want to ensure our team is comprised of the best talent possible.”
More guidance will be provided to managers prior to performance evaluations. Employees who will be affected will receive notifications on February 10th – with those outside the U.S. receiving notifications subsequently.
Layoffs are never easy. However, I believe this will effectively strengthen our team and help us create leading technologies to realize a future where people are connected.
