ByteDance Prepares ‘Doubao Work’ as Alibaba and Tencent Battle for Agent Market

August 24, 2026 – ByteDance has executed a major strategic consolidation of its office AI portfolio, merging the teams behind its TRAE and Coze platforms into its flagship Doubao (Bean Bag) ecosystem. The restructuring aims to centralize ByteDance’s AI office capabilities under a single, unified brand as the company prepares to launch a standalone product dubbed “Doubao Work.”

Under the new organizational structure, the TRAE Work and Coze platforms will integrate their capabilities directly into Doubao’s workplace scenarios, while TRAE’s IDE and CLI tools will continue to operate as specialized programming sub-brands. All affected product and operations teams will now report to Zhao Qi, the head of Doubao. ByteDance stated that the move is designed to better synergize technical resources and enhance user experience, assuring that existing user rights will remain unaffected.

The strategic pivot signals ByteDance’s intent to establish Doubao as its primary AI business pillar. To this end, the company is expected to launch the independent “Doubao Work” product as early as this week. This aggressive consolidation comes at a critical juncture in China’s highly competitive enterprise AI market, where major tech giants are rapidly racing to dominate the AI agent office sector.

Alibaba recently entered the fray in early August with the launch of its “Qwen Work” AI agent product. Spearheaded by DingTalk’s new CEO Chen Yusen, this offering represents Alibaba’s flagship play in the agent-driven office market. Meanwhile, Tencent is experiencing explosive growth with its own office AI agent, WorkBuddy. Internally, Tencent views WorkBuddy as a potential third phenomenally successful product, standing alongside its mega-hits QQ and WeChat.

The competitive stakes are high. According to the 2026 Q2 China Office AI Agent Platform Market Insight Report released by Analysys on July 20, Tencent’s WorkBuddy dominated the market in June, surpassing 20 million monthly PC visits. This figure not only secured the top industry position but also exceeded the combined traffic of the second- and third-place products, highlighting the intense pressure ByteDance faces to capture market share with its newly unified Doubao Work platform.
