August 15, 2024 – Typically, when one thinks of bulletproof cars, images of large SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade or luxury sedans such as the BMW 7 Series might spring to mind. However, Brazilian consumers now have the option to enjoy the same level of security in a much more accessible vehicle: the Toyota Corolla.

Collaborating with local armor experts including Avallon, Carbon, Evolution Blindagens, and Parvi Blindados, Toyota Brazil is offering armor retrofit services for both new and used vehicles. Customers interested in this service can have their vehicles, whether new or pre-owned, sent to their preferred armor company through local Toyota dealerships for retrofitting, with the option to have the process completed even before taking delivery of the car.
According to the official website, the retrofit service is available for various Toyota models including the Corolla sedan, Corolla Cross SUV, Hilux pickup, and SW4 (Fortuner) SUV. Used vehicles from 2020 onwards are also eligible for retrofitting, subject to assessment by Toyota dealers.
The companies involved in the retrofit process utilize specialized composite materials to reinforce the car body and install thicker windows, significantly enhancing the vehicle’s security. Reports indicate that the armor can withstand shots from small firearms and attacks from other weapons like baseball bats or metal pipes.
Although specific retrofit costs are not yet disclosed, Toyota offers a 5-year warranty on the armor installation service, with material warranties ranging from 5 to 10 years depending on the component.
It’s worth noting that despite a slight decline in Brazil’s overall crime rate, there were still 39,500 homicides last year. This alarming statistic fuels the growing demand for enhanced vehicle security as Brazilians seek protection from the pervasive violence on the country’s roads.
