August 15, 2024 – Canon has recently clarified through a statement released via Peta Pixel on August 13th that it has not implemented any measures to restrict the use of third-party batteries in its EOS R5 Mark II cameras. This clarification comes in response to user feedback and speculation regarding compatibility issues.
Tech enthusiast Justin Chu highlighted the issue when he encountered difficulties using third-party batteries with the Canon BG-R20 battery grip while testing his new EOS R5 II camera. Similarly, reports from Canon Rumors indicated that some users faced problems with their EOS R5 Mark II cameras not powering on when using third-party batteries.
These issues arose following the release of Canon’s new LP-E6P battery, along with certain limitations imposed on older LP-E6 series batteries. This led to speculation among consumers that Canon might have introduced measures to prevent the use of third-party batteries in the R5 II.
However, Canon has firmly denied implementing any such restrictions through an official email response. The company did recommend the use of its own LP-E6P or LP-E6N/H batteries for optimal performance but clarified that using LP-E6N/H batteries might result in certain limitations.
Specifically, when using LP-E6NH/LP-E6N batteries, users may experience the following restrictions:
Inability to use network (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) functionality
Limited use of multi-function hot shoe accessories that require significant power from the camera
Inability to use pre-burst shooting, HDMI RAW output, and dual shooting (photos and videos)
Potential reduction in continuous shooting speed
Restrictions on resolution, image quality, and frame rate during video recording
Canon’s statement aims to provide clarity and reassure customers that the company has not actively blocked the use of third-party batteries in its EOS R5 Mark II cameras.
