Microsoft Denies Collaboration with AMD on Development of Athena Processor

May 06, 2023 – Microsoft is reportedly collaborating with AMD to expand the latter’s reach into the field of artificial intelligence (AI) processors. The two companies are said to be working together to offer an alternative to the AI chip market dominated by Nvidia.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft is providing engineering resources and other forms of support to AMD. They are also collaborating on the development of a Microsoft-designed processor codenamed “Athena”.

While there were previous reports of Microsoft and AMD working together on this project, Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw has denied AMD’s involvement in the Athena development program. “AMD is a great partner, but they are not involved in the project,” he said.
