U.S. PC Market Grows by 5% in Q1 2024, Fueled by Windows 10 Transition and AI Technology

June 27, 2024 – According to a recent report by market analysis firm Canalys, the U.S. PC market experienced a 5% year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2024, with shipments reaching 14.8 million units. Canalys predicts that total PC shipments in the U.S. will hit 69 million by the end of 2024 and further increase by 8% to 75 million in 2025.

One of the key factors driving this growth, as highlighted in the report, is the upcoming end of support for the Windows 10 operating system. This change is expected to trigger a wave of system upgrades, prompting consumers and businesses to consider purchasing new computers. “A considerable number of users are still on Windows 10, and we expect the momentum of PC replacement to intensify in the next four months,” said Canalys analyst Greg Davis.

The strong performance of the U.S. PC market in the early part of the year was also attributed to continued promotional activities by manufacturers following the holiday season. Davis noted that consumer and business spending has increased due to the stable macroeconomic situation in the U.S. over the past few months.

Furthermore, the report mentioned that the introduction of new PC products with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in both the Apple and Windows ecosystems could further stimulate market shipments, aligning with analysts’ expectations. “This coincides with the launch of new products featuring more device-side AI functionality, which will attract consumers and businesses in both Windows and Apple ecosystems,” Davis explained.

Apple computers have captured a significant share of the U.S. PC market (14.2%) and achieved a 22% year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2024. Among Windows PC manufacturers, Lenovo emerged as the winner with a 22% increase in shipments, while Dell and HP experienced declines but maintained the highest market share this quarter.

In conclusion, the U.S. PC market is poised for continued growth, driven by the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, the introduction of AI-enabled devices, and stable macroeconomic conditions. Manufacturers are capitalizing on these trends by offering promotional activities and introducing innovative products to meet consumer and business demands.
