Meta Holds Off on EU Release of Multimodal AI Model Due to Regulatory Constraints

July 18, 2024 – According to a report by Axios, Meta has announced in a statement that they are set to unleash a multimodal Llama model; however, due to the uncertainty of the regulatory environment, the model will not be released in the European Union.

Meta clarified that this decision implies that even if the model were to be released under an open license, EU customers and companies would still be unable to access the multimodal version. Instead, Meta intends to provide EU clients and businesses with a text-only version of the Llama 3 model.

The report highlights that Meta’s challenge does not stem from the Artificial Intelligence Act but rather from the挣扎 to utilize EU customer data for model training while adhering to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Meta emphasizes the importance of using local data for training to ensure that their products accurately reflect the terminology and culture of the region.

Several other American technology companies have made similar decisions. As previously reported, Apple announced in June that due to regulatory issues, EU users will not have access to certain features like Apple Intelligence when their upcoming systems, iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, are released this fall.
