Google Wallet Raises Compatibility Standards, Leaving Some Older Devices Behind

May 13, 2024 – Google Wallet, the payment software introduced by Google for Android devices, has recently updated its support page, announcing an increase in compatibility requirements that may render the app unusable on certain older devices.

Users can quickly make payments through NFC as well as store passes and tickets using Google Wallet. Effective June 10, 2024, the new compatibility standards will mandate that smartphones must be running Android 9 or a higher version, while smartwatches must have Wear OS 2.x or above installed.

Android 9, released in 2018, has been rolled out to a range of devices including the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 series, Huawei P10 series, and Google’s own Pixel line of smartphones.

Go to Settings

Navigate to About Phone/Tablet

Tap on Android Version

For Smartwatches:

Open Settings

Choose System

Select About Device

Tap on Version

Check Operating System Version/System Version
