June 8, 2023 – In a conference hosted by the Economic Times of India, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, revealed that the company has yet to commence training the successor to GPT-4, known as GPT-5.
Altman stated, “There is still a lot of work to be done before we begin training this model. We are exploring new ideas that we believe are necessary, but we are definitely not ready to start yet.”
Earlier this year in March, over 1,100 individuals, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, signed an open letter urging all artificial intelligence laboratories to immediately halt the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months. At that time, Altman acknowledged that the letter “overlooked the technical details that we need to pause,” but also admitted that OpenAI had not initiated the training of GPT-5 and had “no immediate plans” to do so.
Altman once again addressed concerns about artificial intelligence, stating that the company had conducted evaluations of potential risks through external audits, red team testing, and security assessments. “When we completed GPT-4, it took us over six months to prepare for its release,” Altman emphasized.
In an earlier interview, Altman also expressed OpenAI’s stance against excessive regulation of small AI startups, saying, “The only regulation we advocate for is our own and companies more powerful than us.” Altman added.
Altman’s visit to India is part of his proactive engagement with legislators and industry stakeholders worldwide to build trust. During his meetings, Altman has actively encouraged policymakers to thoughtfully consider the potential abuses and other negative impacts that widespread adoption of artificial intelligence may bring. He has emphasized the need to develop appropriate safeguards and preventive measures to avoid any unintended accidents.
