October 22, 2024 – Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has officially unveiled its Application Programming Interface (API), empowering developers to integrate Grok into other applications.
Musk announced this news on Monday, accompanied by the release of the API link on the xAI website. Prior to this, Musk had confirmed plans to offer an API for Grok in August and open-sourced the software’s weights in March.
To access and utilize the API, users must log in to their xAI accounts and request access to PromptIDE and the API through their profile settings. Currently, the API features a single model, named “grok-beta,” priced at 5permillioninputtokensand15 per million output tokens.
Additionally, the API enables users to execute function calls, facilitating Grok’s integration with databases, search engines, and other external software tools.
xAI and Musk introduced Grok, the company’s first product, last November and followed up with the launch of the Grok 1.5V visual processing model in April this year.
In May, documents revealed that xAI had raised $6 billion in Series B funding, despite Musk denying reports about the company’s plans to raise funds in January. Musk also discussed the possibility of Tesla investing in xAI in July, noting that such an investment would require shareholder approval.
