Instagram Reportedly Planning Standalone Reels App to Challenge TikTok

February 27, 2025 – According to a report by The Information today, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has informed employees that the platform is contemplating the launch of a standalone application specifically for its short-video feature, Reels.

The report suggests that Meta, the parent company of Instagram, intends to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding TikTok in the United States, aiming to offer a similar short-video browsing experience. Earlier this year in January, Meta also released a new video editing app called Edits, apparently in an attempt to compete with CapCut, a video editing tool owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance.

It’s worth noting that Meta previously attempted to compete with TikTok in 2018 by launching an independent video-sharing app called Lasso. However, the app failed to gain significant traction and was eventually shut down. With the planned launch of a dedicated Reels app, Meta seems poised to take another shot at the short-video market.
