Breaking the 900Wh/L Barrier: Lenovo’s ED 1000 Pushes Laptop Battery Density to Four Digits

September 10, 2026 – According to ETNews, Lenovo plans to launch laptops equipped with silicon-anode batteries next year, making it the world’s first PC manufacturer to adopt this technology.

The battery, designated as “ED 1000,” was jointly developed by Lenovo and a research team at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Traditional lithium batteries primarily use graphite as the anode material, whereas silicon-anode batteries replace graphite with silicon. The theoretical capacity of silicon is more than 10 times that of graphite. Increasing the silicon content in the anode can significantly boost energy density, thereby extending laptop battery life and reducing charging times.

The Lenovo ED 1000 achieves a volumetric energy density of 1000Wh/L, representing an approximate 10% increase over existing graphite batteries. Currently, the limit for graphite-anode laptop batteries is around 900Wh/L. Lenovo has thus become the first to push laptop battery energy density into the four-digit range.

This breakthrough is particularly significant for AI PCs. With the rapid growth in on-device AI computing demands, laptops experience a substantial increase in power consumption when performing local AI inference without relying on the cloud.

A higher energy density battery can provide longer battery life and faster charging speeds without increasing the physical size. It also helps achieve a slimmer and lighter chassis design. Lenovo plans to prioritize applying this silicon-anode battery to its high-performance AI PC product line to strengthen its technological advantage in the AI laptop market.

However, the commercialization of silicon-anode batteries still faces challenges. During charging and discharging, silicon can expand in volume by more than three times its original size. This phenomenon, known as the “swelling effect,” poses extremely high demands on battery structural design and mass production processes. It is also the primary reason why silicon-anode batteries have yet to achieve large-scale commercial use in laptops. Lenovo must resolve issues regarding durability and safety, with mass production capability being the ultimate test.
