Apple Claims Top Spot in Q4 2023 Smartphone Shipments, Outpacing Samsung and Others

January 16, 2024 – According to recent data released by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the global smartphone shipments for the fourth quarter of 2023 have been officially announced.

The report reveals that Apple shipped 80.5 million units in Q4 2023, securing a market share of 24.7% and claiming the top spot in the industry. Samsung followed closely behind with shipments of 53 million units, accounting for 16.3% of the market share and taking the second position.

After Apple and Samsung, Xiaomi, Transsion, and vivo occupied the next three spots with shipments of 40.7 million, 28.2 million, and 24.1 million units, respectively. Their market shares stood at 12.5%, 8.6%, and 7.4%, accordingly.

IDC attributed the rapid growth of brands like Transsion and Xiaomi in the latter half of 2023 to the strong demand emerging from developing markets.

Undoubtedly, the biggest winner in this race was Apple. The Cupertino-based tech giant is the only company among the top three smartphone brands to achieve positive growth every year. This marks the first time that Apple has held the number one position in the industry.

IDC further noted that the competition in the smartphone market is intensifying. While Huawei is making a comeback, brands like OnePlus and Honor are consistently gaining traction in the mid-range and entry-level segments. Looking ahead, the market is expected to embrace further diversification among various brands.
