Volvo Revises 2030 Electrification Goal Due to Lower-Than-Expected Demand

September 05, 2024 – Swedish automaker Volvo has announced on Wednesday, according to Reuters, that it has revised its previous goal of only selling fully electric vehicles by 2030. The company now plans to include some hybrid cars in its product lineup for that year.

Volvo Cars stated that due to changing market conditions and customer demands, the company has adjusted its objectives. By 2030, it aims to have over 90% of its sold vehicles being fully electric or hybrids.

Previously, in 2021, Volvo had declared its intention to phase out all internal combustion engine vehicles, including hybrids, with the goal of selling only pure electric cars by 2030. Additionally, the company had planned to exclusively sell its models online.

In March 2024, Volvo made headlines by becoming the first major traditional carmaker to completely discontinue diesel-powered vehicles.

CEO Jim Rowan had earlier emphasized that “electric propulsion is our future,” adding that Volvo would focus on creating a range of luxurious pure electric vehicles that meet customer expectations.
