Tesla’s Supercharger Network Expansion Hits a Snag, New Ports Down 28% YoY

September 23, 2024 – In recent months, the expansion of Tesla’s Supercharger network has experienced a slowdown. According to a report by IT Home in April this year, the company’s massive layoffs had depleted the team responsible for installing new electric vehicle charging stations.

Despite Tesla’s efforts to rebuild the team, including rehiring some previously laid-off employees, the number of newly opened Supercharger ports declined by 28% between May and August compared to the same period last year, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Currently, the company is opening up its charging network to other automakers and seeking additional public funding for the construction of charging stations.

However, Elon Musk remains optimistic about the layout of the Supercharger network. In May, he stated that Tesla would spend over $500 million this year to expand its Supercharger network, adding thousands of new charging stations. Musk emphasized that this budget is only for new sites and expansions, excluding operating costs which are “much higher”.
