October 14, 2024 – Despite its resemblance in shape and color to the Cybertruck, Tesla’s two-seater autonomous taxi, the Cybercab, does not feature a stainless steel exterior, according to a revelation made by a purported company engineer on social media platform X.
The engineer, going by the name Eric E., stated on the X platform, “The exterior panels are not stainless steel. The weight and cost of stainless steel are not desirable for our efficient Robotaxi.” Although the X account appears to belong to Tesla’s lead mechanical design engineer, it has not been verified or explicitly linked to the company.
Tesla unveiled the autonomous-only Cybercab at an event near Los Angeles on Thursday. CEO Elon Musk indicated that the two-seater vehicle would have a price tag below $30,000 and is slated for production in 2026.
At first glance, the Cybercab’s design bears similarities to the angular and steel-bodied Cybertruck. Images shared by Tesla also exhibited a metallic finish, sparking speculation about whether the vehicle’s exterior was crafted from stainless steel. However, Eric E.’s comments have now clarified that this is not the case.
