January 6, 2025 – Tesla’s Cybertruck deliveries have significantly missed expectations, with reports indicating that fourth-quarter deliveries may range between just 9,000 to 12,000 units. This figure stands in stark contrast to The Verge’s estimate of an annual delivery range of 35,000 to 50,000 vehicles, and is even further from the over one million pre-orders that Tesla had previously announced.
During Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Elon Musk had forecasted an annual production capacity for the Cybertruck between 250,000 to 500,000 units, and he stated in 2023 that the vehicle would become a significant contributor to the company’s cash flow within 18 months.
However, it appears that the lower than expected deliveries of the Cybertruck are not solely due to production issues. Despite Tesla offering discounts and incentives to purchase the Cybertruck this quarter, inventory remains unsold.
Analysts suggest that the increased price and reduced range of the production version of the Cybertruck compared to the initial prototype may be the primary reasons for the slowdown in market demand.
Furthermore, the Cybertruck has been prone to frequent malfunctions and accidents since its first deliveries in November 2023. The vehicle has been recalled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) a total of seven times, potentially impacting consumer confidence and further affecting delivery numbers.
