May 07, 2024 – Recent reports from technology media outlet Android Central have revealed photos of protective cases for the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 XL smartphones, confirming once again that Google plans to unveil three variants of its Pixel 9 series this year: the standard edition, the Pro edition, and a new XL edition.
Historically, Google had used the XL suffix to designate its larger-sized Pixel phones until the release of the single-size Pixel 5, when this naming convention was discontinued. However, in 2021, Google renamed its flagship models as “Pro” and has continued this nomenclature since. The recently leaked protective cases suggest that Google is further segmenting its Pro line by offering two distinct sizes, marked by the reinstatement of the XL designation.
According to the information available, the three Pixel 9 models will sport the following screen sizes:
Pixel 9 Pro XL: 6.5 inches
Pixel 9 Pro: 6.1 inches
Pixel 9: 6.03 inches
Thinborne, a renowned manufacturer of mobile phone cases known for its durable and slim aramid fiber cases, has provided insights into the design of the new Pixel 9 series. Last year’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro featured flat screens with rounded corners on the sides. Thinborne’s protective case designs suggest that the Pixel 9 series will maintain the flat screen design while further reducing the curvature of the corners, resulting in a more squared-off aesthetic.
