July 04, 2024 – Less than eight months after its introduction, Amazon has announced the discontinuation of its Astro security robot for business use.
In November 2023, Amazon unveiled Astro for Business, positioning it as a workplace security robot priced at $2,349.99. This innovative robot could move autonomously or be controlled via remote, featuring a high-definition periscope camera with night vision capabilities. It provided 24/7 live video monitoring and two-way communication, enhancing security measures for businesses.
To complement the robot, Amazon also offered three distinct subscription services tailored to assist companies in monitoring their facilities. However, the company has recently shifted its focus.
According to an Amazon spokesperson, the discontinuation of Astro for Business has not resulted in any layoffs. Instead, the company plans to redirect its resources towards advancing its home robot initiatives. Meanwhile, the consumer version of Astro, launched in 2021, remains available for purchase at $1,600 (by invitation only).
Interestingly, Panos Panay, the former head of Microsoft’s Surface division, joined Amazon last year to lead its devices and services division, which includes consumer robots. This move signals a potential shift in Amazon’s robotics and consumer technology strategies.
