TikTok Announces Revival of Services for American Users

January 20, 2025 – In a statement released on social media platform X on January 19, local time, TikTok announced that it was in the process of restoring services for users in the United States. Furthermore, the company revealed plans to collaborate with President-elect Trump of the United States to develop a long-term solution that would allow TikTok to “remain in the US.”

At 1 PM EST on the same day, some TikTok users in the US regained access to their messages, profiles, and the ability to read comments on the app.

According to reports, President-elect Trump posted on social media that he would issue an executive order on Monday, January 20, extending the deadline before the statutory ban on TikTok would take effect. He also stated that any company assisting TikTok in avoiding shutdown would not be held liable until the executive order was issued. Additionally, Trump expressed his hope that the US would “own 50% of any future joint venture” to “save TikTok.”

On April 24 of last year, President Biden signed a bill passed by both chambers of Congress requiring ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese entity within 270 days or face a ban on the app in the US.

On January 17, local time, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of upholding the ban on the short-video social media platform TikTok in the country. The TikTok app was poised to be removed from US app stores as early as January 19.

Separately, TikTok had already been removed from the US App Store and Google Play Store the previous day, and the TikTok app and website in the US were no longer able to display video content.
