Korean Court Rejects Meta’s Appeal, Upholds 6.7 Billion Won Fine for User Data Leak

March 14, 2025 – The Supreme Court of Korea rejected an appeal by social media giant Meta against a 6.7 billion Korean won fine imposed by the Korea Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) on Thursday. Judicial sources revealed that the Supreme Court upheld the verdicts of lower courts in October 2023 and September last year.

In November 2020, the PIPC imposed a fine on Meta due to its investigation finding that at least 3.3 million Korean users’ information had been provided to third parties without their knowledge from May 2012 to June 2018. In response, Meta filed a lawsuit in March 2021, claiming that the information sharing was based on user consent and was not forced. However, the Supreme Court deemed the PIPC’s penalty measures legitimate and dismissed Meta’s appeal.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the PIPC stated that it would resume the implementation of corrective measures that had been suspended due to the lawsuit.
