March 10, 2025 – According to a report published by technology media outlet SamMobile on March 9th, Google hosted an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) session on YouTube, focusing on Android widgets. During the event, the Google team revealed that they are considering the introduction of stackable widgets to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), a feature that has been highly requested by both users and developers.

Although Google has not yet disclosed specific details, it is speculated that the stackable widgets functionality could mirror the implementation found on Samsung devices. This would allow users to place a widget on the home screen, long-press it to create a stack, and add multiple widgets to the existing one. Users could then quickly switch between different widgets in the stack by swiping left or right, a design that not only conserves homescreen space but also enhances multitasking convenience.
Furthermore, Google intends to upgrade AOSP to support the use of widgets on the lock screen, thereby extending the functionality of the Android system. Presently, Samsung Galaxy devices offer this capability, but it is restricted to first-party widgets. Google’s planned upgrade will enable users to utilize third-party widgets, adding another layer of personalization to the lock screen experience. This development promises to bring more choices and flexibility to Android users.
