Apple Eyes Lens Technology as Key Supplier for Foldable iPhone’s Ultra-Thin Glass

February 13, 2025 – Apple has accelerated the development of its first foldable iPhone, sparking collaborations with suppliers of ultra-thin glass (UTG). Reports from The Elec indicate that Apple intends to utilize UTG provided by Chinese manufacturer Lens Technology for its upcoming foldable devices. It is anticipated that Lens Technology will secure approximately 70% of the orders, while Corning may potentially supply the raw materials.

Lens Technology stands out due to its significant advantages in UTG mass production and financial strength, particularly excelling in glass strengthening, minimizing edge cracks after cutting, and glass etching techniques. The company has plans to expand its UTG production line in 2025, aligning with Apple’s expected launch of its first foldable device in late 2026.

Apple’s UTG design approach focuses on thinning only the central portion, aiming to enhance durability while maintaining an overall consistent thickness.

Furthermore, Korean companies Dowoo Insys and UTI are rumored to be potential secondary suppliers for Apple. Interestingly, Dowoo Insys was granted two patents for UTG central thinning technology in October 2024, one of which bears similarities to a patent filed by Apple during the same period.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display is rumored to be the exclusive panel supplier for Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone. According to various media outlets and industry insiders, including Ming-Chi Kuo, Jeff Pu, The Information, and The Wall Street Journal, the device is predicted to hit the market as early as late 2026 or early 2027.
