November 13, 2024 – According to Deadline, Amazon is shutting down its free, ad-supported streaming television service, Freevee. The original content from Freevee is being gradually migrated to Prime Video, where users, even without a Prime subscription, can access new episodes previously available on Freevee. The Freevee brand, as reported by Deadline, is set to be phased out in the “coming weeks.”
Publicly available information reveals that Freevee originally launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedive, a standalone offering from Amazon’s IMDb. It was renamed to IMDb TV just a few months after its debut and then rebranded as Freevee in 2022. The service featured some original programming, including “Bosch: Legacy” and “Alexa & Katie,” and Amazon had also begun adding select Prime Video content to the platform in 2023.
In a statement provided to Deadline, an Amazon spokesperson said, “To deliver a more streamlined viewing experience for our customers, we have made the decision to wind down the Freevee brand. Prime members will continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to their content, while non-Prime members can still explore a vast selection of free streaming content, including original programming from Amazon Studios, a variety of licensed movies and TV shows, as well as a broad range of FAST channels – all available on Prime Video.”
