August 05, 2024 – According to the latest research from Edmunds, over half of Tesla owners in the United States have abandoned electric vehicles in favor of gas-powered cars in 2024. Only 32% of these owners have chosen to stick with pure electric models.
Breaking down the numbers, 51% of Tesla owners have switched to traditional gas-powered vehicles, 10% have opted for hybrid models, and 6% have chosen plug-in hybrids. This trend aligns with a recent survey conducted by McKinsey, which revealed that nearly half (46%) of American electric vehicle owners are likely to return to gas-powered cars when purchasing their next vehicle.
While this data may initially seem like bad news for Tesla and the electric vehicle market at large, it actually represents a significant improvement compared to previous years. According to Edmunds’ data, in 2020, a staggering 76% of Tesla owners ditched their electric vehicles for gas-powered ones, with only 9% choosing other electric models. However, this percentage has been steadily decreasing since then.
The shift in trend could indicate that using electric vehicles in the US is becoming easier over time. Yet, the current statistics suggest that significant improvements are still needed to make electric cars more appealing to a broader audience.
It’s also worth noting that an increasing number of buyers are replacing their Teslas with electric vehicles from other traditional car manufacturers. This trend is somewhat predictable, considering Tesla’s transition from being an electric vehicle pioneer to facing numerous mainstream competitors in the market today.
