August 15, 2024 – Google stole the spotlight yesterday by holding a new product launch event ahead of Apple’s expected iPhone 16 series reveal, showcasing the advanced AI capabilities of its Pixel 9 series. This move has sparked widespread attention within the industry, with Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman noting that Apple appears to be lagging behind Google in AI technology by at least two to three years.
During the event, Google provided a comprehensive demonstration of the powerful functionalities of its Gemini AI, which has been deeply integrated into both the Android operating system and the Pixel smartphones. In contrast, while Apple announced its Apple Intelligence at WWDC, the practical application of this technology remains immature. Reports suggest that some features may not even be ready for the release of the iPhone 16.
Furthermore, Google emphasized that Gemini already supports multiple regions and languages globally, whereas Apple Intelligence is currently limited to certain regions and English only. Additionally, Google has successfully integrated Gemini into Google Assistant, significantly enhancing its capabilities beyond the current level of Siri, with stronger natural language understanding and task execution abilities.
Despite Apple’s impressive hardware prowess, its progress in the AI software domain seems relatively sluggish. Gurman wrote after watching Google’s announcement, “It’s hard not to think that Apple is at least 2-3 years behind in this field after seeing Google’s latest AI announcements.”
It’s worth noting that Google’s next-generation proprietary chip is expected to be featured in the upcoming Pixel 10, potentially further boosting its AI performance. On the other hand, Apple’s advantage in the chip sector has not yet been fully reflected in AI.
