November 21, 2024 – According to reports from Reuters, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry announced on Wednesday that technology giant Apple Inc. has presented a $100 million investment plan to Indonesia, aiming to establish a manufacturing plant for producing accessories and components in the country.
This move comes after the Indonesian government banned the sale of iPhone 16 due to Apple’s failure to meet the local content requirements for smartphone components. Indonesia demands that smartphones sold domestically must contain at least 40% locally-made parts. Similarly, Google’s smartphones have also been prohibited from sale in the country for comparable reasons.
Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, a spokesman for the Indonesian Trade Ministry, stated in a declaration that the ministry will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss Apple’s proposed factory construction in West Java. “By holding the meeting on Thursday, it signifies that the Minister of Industry welcomes Apple’s investment commitment,” he said.
Currently, Apple does not operate any manufacturing plants in Indonesia. However, since 2018, the company has established an App Developer Academy in the country, with a total investment of 1.6 trillion Indonesian rupiahs. This new investment plan marks a significant step forward in Apple’s presence and commitment to the Indonesian market.
