Google Fights Back: DOJ’s Order to Sell Chrome ‘Harms Consumers, Developers, and US Tech Leadership’

November 21, 2024 – Following a report by tech media outlet AppleInsider on November 20th, revealing that the US Department of Justice has ordered Google to sell its Chrome browser, the search engine giant has launched a counterattack. Google argues that such a move would harm consumers, developers, and America’s technological leadership.

According to the report, which was published on November 19th, the top antitrust official at the US Department of Justice has decided to ask a judge to compel Alphabet’s Google to divest its Chrome browser. This is because Chrome serves as a critical gateway for most people to access its search engine.

In a statement, Google executive Lee-Anne Mulholland stated, “Government intervention in this manner would undermine consumers, developers, and America’s technology leadership at a time when it is needed most.”

Google maintains that selling Chrome to a third party would make it more difficult to maintain the browser and adequately protect user security. The company is reportedly gearing up for a legal battle to defend its position and prevent the forced sale of Chrome.
