Anthropic Raises $450 Million to Fuel Development of Ethical AI Systems

May 24, 2023 – In a recent announcement from San Francisco, California, Anthropic, an AI startup, revealed securing a staggering $450 million in Series C funding. This round was led by Spark Capital, with participation from notable investors such as Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures, and Zoom Ventures. Prior to this round, Google had already invested between $300 million and $400 million in Anthropic.

Reports indicate that this latest funding round has propelled Anthropic’s total funding to nearly $1 billion, solidifying its position as one of the most well-funded AI startups. While the company did not disclose its valuation, insiders suggest that it hovers around $5 billion.

Anthropic stated that the newly acquired capital will further support the development of useful, benign, and ethical AI systems, including Claude, an AI assistant capable of executing various conversational and text processing tasks.

Founded by former executives of OpenAI, Anthropic currently competes with OpenAI, the developers behind the chatbot ChatGPT. Its Claude model is considered a significant rival to OpenAI’s GPT-4.
