Honda and Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team Forge a Groundbreaking Partnership

May 24, 2023 – Amidst great anticipation, Honda, the renowned automotive giant, has announced its triumphant return to the electrifying world of Formula 1 racing. In an unexpected move, Honda has inked a groundbreaking agreement with the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team, marking their collaboration in the upcoming seasons. This partnership comes as Formula 1 embarks on a new era, striving to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and demanding teams to utilize 100% sustainable fuels starting from 2026. Notably, Honda will provide the power units for the team, aligning perfectly with their ambitious carbon-neutral goals and driving the development of cutting-edge technologies.

Looking ahead to 2026, a pivotal year for Formula 1, the regulations will undergo a significant transformation. While reducing the reliance on conventional engine power, the sport will witness a threefold increase in the output power of the energy recovery system, allowing race cars to regenerate energy during deceleration and convert it into electricity. This radical shift will result in a balanced power output between the engine and electric motors, with the latter contributing a substantial 50% share, representing a substantial increase compared to the current meager contribution of less than 20%.

For Honda, this decision to re-enter the exhilarating realm of F1 is not merely motivated by the thrill of racing but by the undeniable synergy between the sport’s new regulations and their own carbon-neutral aspirations. The opportunity to contribute to the development of future technologies within the competitive F1 landscape resonated profoundly with Honda, further cementing their resolve. Since 2022, all of Honda’s racing endeavors have been entrusted to Honda Racing Corporation, and henceforth, they will spearhead the development, participation, and operations of the F1 power units.

Mr. Seiji Kuraishi, the Representative Director, President, and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “With the implementation of the new regulations scheduled for 2026, the key to victory lies in compact, lightweight, and high-power motors, coupled with high-performance batteries capable of providing substantial electrical power. The knowledge and experience gained from this endeavor will have a direct impact on our future competitiveness in the production of electric vehicles, including flagship electric sports cars. Additionally, we can leverage these advancements across various fields, such as the ongoing development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.”

As Honda embarks on this thrilling journey back into the heart of Formula 1, their aspirations for carbon neutrality and technological advancement intertwine, showcasing their commitment to shaping a sustainable and high-performance future for the automotive industry. The electrifying circuits await the roar of Honda’s engines, promising an enthralling spectacle for motorsport enthusiasts worldwide.
