May 21, 2024 – The recent launch of GPT-4o, the latest artificial intelligence model from OpenAI, has propelled the revenue of the company’s mobile application ChatGPT to unprecedented heights. While GPT-4o is freely accessible on the official website, the mobile version of ChatGPT requires users to upgrade to OpenAI’s paid subscription service, “ChatGPT Plus,” at a monthly fee of $19.99, to experience this cutting-edge technology.
This strategic decision has sparked a surge in demand for subscription services among mobile users, resulting in OpenAI’s highest-ever mobile revenue growth. According to data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, ChatGPT’s mobile app witnessed a staggering 22% increase in net revenue on the day of GPT-4o’s release, and the growth momentum continued in the subsequent days. By Tuesday, net revenue had reached 900,000,almostdoubleitsdailyaverageof491,000 (net revenue figures are calculated after deductions by Apple and Google stores).
Prior to this, ChatGPT had experienced a minor revenue spike in April this year, but it was a one-day anomaly rather than a sustained growth. Appfigures notes that last week (Monday through Friday), the total net revenue of the ChatGPT mobile app on the App Store and Google Play Store reached $4.2 million, marking the app’s largest revenue increase ever. This significant revenue boost indicates a strong consumer interest in exploring the latest AI technology, even at a price higher than a Netflix subscription.
The data reveals that the Apple App Store contributed a significant majority of the new revenue, accounting for 81%. The United States emerged as the top-earning market, generating 1.8million.Germany(282,000), the United Kingdom (212,000),Japan(210,000), France (147,000),Canada(134,000), South Korea (123,000),Brazil(117,000), Australia (102,000),andTurkey(89,000) followed suit.
Notably, there seems to be no sign of a slowdown in the revenue growth momentum, and data indicates that it may persist or even increase further.
