OpenAI Expands to Germany, Increasing its Impact in the European Union

February 8, 2025 – OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is ramping up its international expansion efforts, with Germany being its next target. According to a press release issued this Friday, the company plans to open an office in Munich in the coming months.

In a statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “Germany is renowned for its technological expertise, academic excellence, and industrial innovation. By establishing our first office in Germany, we aim to enable more people, businesses, and institutions to benefit from the potential of artificial intelligence.”

The press release noted that OpenAI has been in communication with German authorities since 2023 regarding the establishment of a satellite office. According to the startup’s statistics, Germany has the highest number of users, paying subscribers, and API developers for its technology among all European countries.

Details about the number of employees OpenAI will hire for the German office and their specific roles remain unclear.

The opening of the office in southern Germany marks a significant step in the San Francisco-based company’s efforts to expand its influence in the European Union, following the establishment of offices in Paris, Brussels, and Dublin.
