Elon Musk’s Unfulfilled Promise: Cybertruck Fails to Recognize Its Own Kind

April 8, 2025 – Tesla Cybertruck owners have taken to social media platform X to voice concerns about the vehicle’s inability to properly recognize and display other Cybertrucks on its in-car screen. Instead of showing them as fellow Cybertrucks, the system currently defaults to depicting them as generic pickup trucks. This falls short of the promise made years ago by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who had envisioned a future where Tesla vehicles could identify and display each other on the screen.

In response to these complaints, Tesla’s chief engineer, Wes Morrill, addressed the issue on X. While acknowledging that the current Cybertruck software lacks the capability to recognize other Cybertrucks, Morrill assured users that this feature is on the company’s to-do list. However, he emphasized that the immediate priority is resolving an issue with the Cybertruck’s trailer display. The current system incorrectly displays trailers, often presenting them as a peculiar combination of a semi-truck and a Cybertruck. Morrill mentioned that an upcoming update will enable the Cybertruck to accurately identify and display trailers.

It’s worth noting that back in July 2020, Musk had shared on X that Tesla vehicles would soon be able to display the specific models and colors of other Tesla cars on their screens, even suggesting the potential for a “bumper cars” game-like feature. Despite Musk’s initial promise of a “soon” rollout, this feature has faced delays, characteristic of what many refer to as “Elon Time.”
