Amazon Tops Fortune 500 for First Time, Ending Walmart’s 13-Year Reign at No. 1

June 4, 2026 – The 2026 Fortune 500 is here, and it’s shaping up to be the most profitable edition yet in the ranking’s 72-year history.

Combined revenues for all 500 companies climbed to 20.98trillion,uproughly5.419.91 trillion a year ago — a figure that now represents about two-thirds of U.S. GDP. Total profits surged even faster, hitting approximately $2.1 trillion in 2025, a year-over-year jump of nearly 12%.

The biggest headline? Amazon has dethroned Walmart after the retailer held the top spot for 13 consecutive years. Walmart slides to No. 2, while UnitedHealth Group claims third. Apple and Alphabet round out the top five at fourth and fifth, respectively.

Tech and finance continue to dominate the earnings leaderboard. Alphabet leads with 132.17billioninprofit,uparound32120.07 billion in earnings — a staggering 64.8% increase that propels it to second place on the profits table. Apple, with $112.01 billion in profit (up 19.5%), drops one spot to third.

Among the “Magnificent Seven,” only Tesla and Apple held their positions. Alphabet, Nvidia, and Microsoft all climbed the rankings, and all four — along with Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Google — cleared the $100 billion net income threshold in 2025.

The list also highlights long-term winners: 15 companies delivered 10-year annualized total shareholder returns exceeding 30%. Nvidia tops that group with a blistering 72% return, followed by AMD, Broadcom, Tesla, and Eli Lilly.
