TikTok Faces Cyberattacks Targeting High-Profile Accounts

June 05, 2024 – TikTok, the popular short-video app, has taken proactive measures to thwart a series of cyberattacks targeting several high-profile accounts, including that of CNN, according to a TikTok spokesperson on Tuesday.

A recent report by Forbes revealed a new vulnerability within the TikTok platform, which could be exploited through direct messages. This exploit required no downloads, clicks, or any form of response beyond simply opening a chat.

“We have been working closely with CNN,” the TikTok spokesperson stated, “access to the affected accounts has been restored, and we have implemented enhanced security measures to protect their accounts.” The number of compromised accounts was “very small,” and the company is collaborating with the affected account holders to restore access when needed.

A TikTok source informed Reuters that reality TV star Paris Hilton’s account was also targeted but remains unharmed.

Notably, CNN isn’t the only news broadcaster facing cybersecurity issues. Earlier this month, personal data of over 25,000 BBC employees was leaked, although the broadcaster denied any ransomware attack.

Beyond addressing these cyberattacks, TikTok is also grappling with the implications of a new US bill. On April 24th, the US President signed legislation that mandates ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell its stake in TikTok by January 19th of next year, or face a ban in the US. The legal challenge against the TikTok ban is set to be heard in a US court in September.
