Seven-Year Run Comes to an End: Nadella Resigns from Starbucks Director Role

June 03, 2024 – On May 30th, local time, Starbucks submitted a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission revealing that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had resigned from the company’s board of directors.

Notably, Nadella did not disclose the specific reasons for his resignation in his letter, but he expressed confidence in Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan and the company’s senior leadership team. It’s worth mentioning that former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, dissatisfied with the company’s performance falling below expectations, posted on LinkedIn urging the company to “reflect honestly, refocus on its core business, and strengthen discipline.”

Nadella joined the Starbucks board in 2017, when his former Microsoft colleague, Kevin Johnson, was preparing to take over as CEO of Starbucks. His addition was seen as a crucial complement, bringing not only insights from the technology sector but also sharing his experience in international operations and distribution.

With Nadella’s departure, the Starbucks board of directors now consists of 10 members.
