Microsoft Urges Upgrade: 240 Million PCs Face Obsolescence as Win10 Support Ends

November 04, 2024 – Microsoft has officially announced that it will discontinue support services for the Windows 10 system on October 14, 2025, strongly recommending users to migrate to the Windows 11 system as soon as possible.

According to Microsoft, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates from October 14, 2025. Continuing to use it will expose users to evolving and adapting malicious threats, posing security risks.

To facilitate a smooth transition to Windows 11 for users, Microsoft has established a straightforward and secure migration process. The company advises users to first check if their current Windows 10 PC is eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11 or consider purchasing a new, more secure PC.

However, there is a caveat. Windows 11 has a minimum hardware requirement that includes a TPM 2.0 chip (supporting security-related functions). While most personal computers sold in the past five years are equipped with this chip, approximately 20% of Windows installations, equivalent to 240 million computers, do not have it.

For these 240 million PCs without the TPM 2.0 chip, upgrading to Windows 11 is not an option. Although many of these PCs could potentially be recycled if they are in good condition, their value for refurbishment and resale is significantly reduced due to their incompatibility with the latest supported Windows version.

Unfortunately, the reality is that regardless of the operating system issue, discarded PCs often end up being thrown away, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions to manage electronic waste.
