October 16, 2024 – In a surprising move, Intel announced today that they have formed an x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group with AMD, marking a historic collaboration between the two tech giants. This group aims to shape the future of the x86 architecture, simplify software development, and ensure interoperability and consistent interfaces.
According to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, the advisory group will provide developers with standard architectural tools, instruction sets, and a clear vision for the future. Gelsinger emphasized that rumors about the “death of x86” have been greatly exaggerated, stating that Intel is not only still alive but thriving, and that the x86 architecture is booming.
“We are on the cusp of one of the most significant periods of innovation for the x86 architecture,” said Gelsinger. “The x86, which has been the foundation of computing for decades, is poised to undergo a period of customization, expansion, and scalability, driven by the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence.”
Microsoft is also a founding member of the organization, which boasts support from a range of industry leaders including Broadcom, Dell, Google, HPE, HP, Lenovo, Meta, Oracle, and Red Hat. Prominent figures such as Linus Torvalds and Tim Sweeney have also lent their support to the initiative.
This unprecedented partnership between Intel and AMD, along with the backing of such a diverse and influential group of industry players, signals a strong commitment to the continued growth and evolution of the x86 ecosystem.
