January 12, 2024 – Google, in a move announced in September 2023, has embarked on a significant rebranding of its Android operating system, with one of the most noticeable changes being the transformation of the familiar green robot icon into a three-dimensional design. At the CES 2024 exhibition, the tech giant christened this revamped mascot “The Bot.”
Since its inception on September 23, 2008 – over 15 years ago – the green robot mascot of Android has lacked an official moniker, with “bugdroid” serving as an unofficial nickname. However, during the CES 2024 festivities, Google made its new The Bot the face of its advertising campaign, featuring it prominently on billboards and monorails in Las Vegas.
The rebranding effort, first teased last September, primarily focused on two key elements: refreshing the Android robot logo and updating the “android” typeface. With regards to the logo, Google opted for a more modern 3D rendering of the robot’s head, a decision that the company claims will aid in its transition between digital and physical spaces.
This shift not only modernizes the visual identity of Android but also aligns with Google’s broader push towards a more immersive and interconnected future.
