Google to End Support for goo.gl Short Links in 2025

July 19, 2024 – Google announced in a press release yesterday (July 18) that it will discontinue its URL shortening service goo.gl on August 25, 2025. After this date, attempts to access shortened links will receive a 404 response.

The tech giant introduced the URL Shortener service in 2009, enabling users to easily share web links and track online traffic. However, Google announced in 2018 that it would be discontinuing the use of goo.gl, advising developers to migrate to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). At that time, Google stated that it would continue to resolve existing goo.gl links, redirecting them to their intended destinations.

Now, Google has revealed that starting from August 23, 2024, some goo.gl links will begin displaying warnings. Full support for the service will end on August 25, 2025.

In a statement, Google said, “We understand that discontinuing the use of goo.gl short links may cause some inconvenience. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Firebase support team. Thank you for using our services, and we hope you will continue to explore the web and app experiences with us in innovative ways.”
