February 24, 2025 – In a recent appearance on BBC Radio’s “Desert Island Discs,” former Apple designer Jony Ive reflected on his journey at Apple, sharing insights into his collaboration with Steve Jobs and their work on the iMac.
Ive revealed that he was involved in the development of the Apple Newton MessagePad prior to Jobs’ return to Apple. Upon Jobs’ comeback, the two formed an instant and strong collaborative bond. Jobs then tasked Ive with designing the first-generation iMac (iMac G3), which was completed in just two to three weeks.

According to Ive, every product designed by a designer is a representation of their ideas and values. Using the Macintosh as an example, he explained, “It not only showcases the creativity of the design team but also conveys their passion for technology and deep understanding of user needs.”
Despite achieving remarkable success at Apple, Ive ultimately decided to part ways in November 2019 to establish his own company, LoveFrom. Ive described this decision as “not a difficult one, but a necessary transition.” He expressed that during his nearly 30-year tenure at Apple, he had “integrated a part of himself into the company,” but felt that “now, it’s time to move on to the next phase with my team, after fulfilling our long-term mission.”
