EU Demands Details from Temu on Measures to Curb Illegal Product Sales

October 13, 2024 – The European Commission has issued a request for information to the shopping platform Temu, seeking details on the measures taken to prevent the sale of illegal products on its platform, as reported by Reuters on the 11th local time.

In a statement released on Friday, the European Commission stated, “Today, the Commission has sent a Request for Information (RFI) to Temu under the Digital Services Act (DSA), requiring the platform to provide detailed information and internal documents explaining the measures they have implemented to address the sale of illegal goods and the reactivation of such sellers on their platform.”

The statement further noted, “Temu must submit the required information by October 21, 2024. Following the evaluation of Temu’s response, the Commission will determine the next steps.”

Earlier this year in May, the European Commission had indicated that as Temu’s user count surpassed a critical threshold, the platform would be subject to stricter EU online content rules.

According to the EU’s Digital Services Act, companies with over 45 million users are designated as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) and are required to implement additional measures to combat illegal and harmful content as well as counterfeit products on their platforms. This designation places Temu, a subsidiary of Pinduoduo, in the same category as Amazon, TikTok, and other major enterprises.
