BYD Partners with 10 Japanese Local Governments to Provide EV-Based Emergency Power

December 5, 2024 – According to a report by Nikkei, BYD Japan announced on December 4th that it has signed cooperation agreements with local governments across Japan through its 10 official sales outlets nationwide in preparation for natural disasters.

The agreements stipulate that BYD can utilize its pure electric vehicles (EVs) at sales outlets to supply power to facilities such as shelters and hospitals during disasters. BYD will collaborate with Japanese local governments to maintain the operation of infrastructure in the event of emergencies.

It is reported that BYD’s EVs are equipped with the “Vehicle to Home (V2H)” function, which allows them to be used as a power source during emergencies. The company’s flagship model, the ATTO3, can provide enough electricity to power a household for approximately four days. The Japanese government’s subsidy assessment criteria for purchasing EVs include measures to activate EVs, such as signing disaster cooperation agreements with local governments.

According to data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA), sales of imported cars in Japan reached 113,887 units in the first half of this year, a decrease of 7% compared to the same period last year. However, sales of pure electric vehicles accounted for nearly 10% of the total, reaching 10,785 units. BYD sold 1,084 units, representing a significant increase of 88% year-on-year.
