November 25, 2024 – According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman’s “Power On” newsletter today, Apple’s upcoming AirTag 2 will continue to utilize a button cell battery rather than a rechargeable one.
Gurman mentioned last week that Apple is currently developing a new AirTag, codenamed B589, which has progressed to mass production testing. The tech giant plans to introduce this new model in mid-2025. This echoes the previous statement by Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who indicated that the mass production of the second-generation AirTag has been postponed from the fourth quarter of 2024 to 2025.
Furthermore, Gurman revealed that the updated AirTag will sport an upgraded chip for enhanced location accuracy, possibly incorporating the second-generation UWB chip first seen in the iPhone 15 series.
Additionally, the new AirTag’s internal speaker will be designed to resist tampering, as a precautionary measure against potential misuse in tracking others. However, in terms of aesthetics, the new AirTag is expected to retain a similar design to its predecessor, without any radical changes.
Gurman also hinted at an extended location range for the new device. Meanwhile, Kuo previously speculated that the new AirTag might integrate with Apple’s Vision Pro headset in some capacity.
