Volkswagen to Launch In-Car AI Chatbot Service with ChatGPT in the US Tomorrow

September 05, 2024 – Volkswagen announced in a press release on September 3rd that it will begin integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI chatbot service into multiple car models starting tomorrow, September 6th.

During the CES 2024 event in January of this year, Volkswagen made headlines by declaring its intention to incorporate ChatGPT into its vehicles, thereby becoming the first mass-produced car brand to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature.

According to the press release, this new functionality is based on Cerence Chat Pro from technology partner Cerence Corporation, enabling a unique, intelligent, and automotive-grade implementation of ChatGPT.

Volkswagen stated that on September 6th, it will introduce the ChatGPT-integrated Plus Speech voice assistant to Volkswagen owners in the United States. The feature will initially be available on 2025 Jetta and Jetta GLI models, as well as MY24 ID.4 vehicles equipped with 82-kilowatt-hour batteries. Both existing and new customers will have access to the AI chat functionality.

Customers can obtain the ChatGPT-supported voice assistance through the Plus Speech with AI subscription service within Volkswagen Car-Net®.

Starting next week, ChatGPT will be automatically activated for current owners of compatible MY24 ID.4 vehicles who have already activated their Plus Speech subscription. MY25 ID.4 vehicles, including those with 62-kilowatt-hour batteries, will integrate ChatGPT later this year.

Most 2025 models will offer the Plus Speech with AI feature when they enter the market. ID.4 and ID.Buzz will provide a complimentary 3-year subscription to Plus Speech with AI, while GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan will include a 1-year subscription at the time of purchase.

For Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Taos, customers can choose to purchase the Plus Speech with AI service through the myVW mobile app. ChatGPT is set to be included in Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models in 2026.

Cerence Chat Pro, the automotive-grade ChatGPT integration, enhances the existing Plus Speech subscription capabilities with generative AI. In addition to controlling navigation, infotainment, and climate adjustment, Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant can answer general knowledge questions and engage in natural, human-like conversations.

Passengers can activate the voice assistant by saying “Hello IDA” or “Hello Volkswagen” (depending on the model) or by pressing a button on the steering wheel.

When the car’s local system cannot fulfill a request, it seamlessly connects to the cloud, where Cerence Chat Pro processes the query using various resources, including ChatGPT, to provide accurate and relevant responses to almost any imaginable inquiry.
