September 29, 2024 – The North American Charging Standard (NACS) of Tesla has been expanding its influence not only in the US market but also gaining support in Japan. On September 27th, Sony Honda Mobility announced that its upcoming electric vehicle, “AFEELA,” will support the NACS charging standard.
With this announcement, Sony Honda Mobility becomes the first company in Japan to adopt the NACS, enabling its AFEELA EVs to utilize Tesla’s Supercharger V3 and V4 networks. Tesla’s Charging Business Director, Max de Zegher, emphasized that Tesla’s Supercharger network accounts for 90% of 150 kW+ charging stalls in Japan and welcomed Sony Honda Mobility as the first Japanese automaker to embrace the NACS standard.
According to de Zegher, “Tesla Superchargers constitute the world’s largest charging network with 60,000 stalls and growing. In Japan, 90% of 150 kW+ charging stalls are Tesla Superchargers. Aligning with Tesla’s mission, we aim to assist more companies in transitioning to electrification and enhance the charging experience for all EV drivers. Therefore, we are thrilled to see the recognition of NACS in Japan and welcome Sony Honda Mobility as the first Japanese automaker to join this trend.”
It is reported that AFEELA’s first electric vehicle is expected to be available for reservations in the US in the first half of 2025, with deliveries commencing in the spring of 2026 in the US, followed by deliveries in Japan in the latter half of 2026.
