Lamborghini CEO Declares 2029 the Right Time for Electric Sports Car Launch, Says Market Not Ready Yet

December 17, 2024 – According to a report by Electrek, the Italian luxury sports car brand Lamborghini has announced that it will postpone the launch of its first all-electric sports car until 2029.

CEO Stephan Winkelmann, speaking from the company’s headquarters near Bologna, stated that the global market is not yet ready to embrace a fully electric luxury sports car. “We believe that 2029 is not too late to introduce an electric sports car,” he said. “In our segment, even by 2025 or 2026, the market will still not be mature.”

Currently, Lamborghini, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, offers three hybrid models: the new Urus SE SUV, the Revuelto sports car, and the all-new Temerario sports car, which starts at 300,000 euros excluding VAT.

Winkelmann also mentioned that there could be a potential delay in Europe’s “phase-out plan for internal combustion engines,” and Lamborghini will be monitoring changes in relevant regulations over the next few years. Additionally, he revealed that the company is considering the use of synthetic fuels as an alternative to electrification. “We see this as the right approach for the future,” he added. “Discussions about synthetic fuels are ongoing, and this presents opportunities for brands like ours.”

Meanwhile, Porsche is also reevaluating its electrification strategy, indicating that it will continue to offer and introduce more internal combustion engine models, reversing its previous decision to only retain the 911 as its sole internal combustion engine model after 2030.
