Boosting Talent Pool: Toyota Considers Weekly 4-Day Schedule

June 28, 2024 –Toyota Motor Corporation is exploring a potential shift in its work culture, considering a four-day workweek for employees as a means to attract top talent, sources have revealed. If negotiations with labor unions are successful, the initiative could be implemented this year.

This transformative policy could positively impact Toyota’s human resources strategy, potentially leading to increased employee satisfaction and productivity. The automotive giant is hoping that the reduction in work hours will enhance work-life balance, thus appealing to a wider pool of prospective employees.

However, the announcement comes on the heels of Toyota’s recent global production and sales figures, which show a dip in performance. In April, global production decreased by 4.0% year-on-year, while sales dropped 0.5%, marking the third consecutive month of decline.

Toyota attributed the downturn to various factors, including recall efforts, production and shipment delays of the Prius model, certification issues at Daihatsu Motor, and fierce competition in the Chinese market. Specifically, sales in China faced significant headwinds, though the company maintains a strong foothold in North America, where production grew 15.7% in April compared to the same period last year. Additionally, Toyota’s sales in Europe and India also showed growth.

Notably, despite the overall market challenges, Toyota’s hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) sales experienced a 28% year-on-year increase, indicating the company’s robust momentum in the new energy vehicle segment. This growth underscores Toyota’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, positioning it as a key player in the future of mobility.
